Phonics and Reading

Reading is a fundamental life skill and is the key to all learning.

We want to create a world where everyone is reading their way to a better life.

Research shows that reading for pleasure can promote better health and wellbeing, aids in building social connections and relationships with others and is associated with a range of factors that help increase the chances of success in later life.

At Littleton, we have a rigorous and sequential approach to the reading curriculum with a strong focus on fluency, confidence, comprehension and enjoyment in reading. This is underpinned with pacey and highly targeted phonics teaching. At all stages reading attainment is assessed and gaps are addressed quickly and effectively for all pupils. We have reviewed and aligned our reading scheme to ensure that the books connect closely to the phonics knowledge that the children are taught.

At Littleton, we believe that one of the greatest gifts we can give a child is the ability to read. We want our children to leave Littleton being competent, fluent readers who enjoy books for pleasure.

We use a blend of carefully levelled reading books. This is supported by the teaching of phonics using the Letters and Sounds document and The Jolly Phonics Scheme.
