History

At Littleton we believe the past and its events and people are the building blocks for our present and future, therefore it is vital our children understand what has happened before them to help shape them as members of the Littleton and the wider community. Littleton’s historical curriculum intends to deliver learning opportunities, which enable all learners to see their own connection to the past, which therefore enables greater understanding of the world we live in.

Our interesting local historical heritage is reflected in our curriculum; from the bustling Shepperton Studios on our doorstep and how it has built around our changing community, to the magnificence of Windsor Castle and our ever changing capital City and how its events, such as The Great Fire of London has influenced its present. Our curriculum is designed to engage our children with their surroundings, and it enables them to experience first-hand what our local area has to offer through workshops, local visits and trips such as Windsor Castle, our Toys from the past workshop and our Great Fire of London workshop. History helps us to understand the present in the context of the past. We use the child’s natural curiosity about their own past to give them access to historical ideas, concepts and language. For young children history starts by exploring their grandparents and birthdays.

Our history curriculum is developing to reflect the diversity of our world; past and present. Our Enquiry Questions are chosen carefully to reflect Britain’s rich cultural heritage and its links with cultures across the globe and to ensure that all learners can access all lessons. Through studying history, pupils will develop an understanding of the complexities of peoples’ lives, the process of change and continuity, the diversity of societies and the relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Our intention is for all pupils to leave KS1 with secure knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. To have enquiring minds that are skilled to think critically, ask perceptive questions, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective and judgement. We intend to inspire and stimulate the pupils of Littleton to know more about the past.
