Transition to Key Stage 2

Transition to Key Stage Two – St Nicholas C of E Primary School

We strive to make the transition to junior school as smooth as possible and have a programme arranged with St Nicholas C of E Primary School.

Pupils in Year 2 visit the junior school for a bread sharing worship and playtimes in the second half of the summer term. The Year 3 teachers come and visit their new pupils at Littleton School, and answer any of the children’s questions. They also have an in-depth discussion regarding their academic and personal progress, with the Littleton Year 2 teacher.

Year 2 children spend two mornings towards the end of the summer term visiting their new classroom and teacher. Pupils with Special Educational Needs may be particularly anxious about the move to junior school and special arrangements may need to be made for them to visit the junior school depending on individual needs. This may also apply to children who are transferring to other local junior schools.

A very popular buddy system is in place between previous Littleton pupils and Year 2 pupils, which involves them coming to meet the children along with the Headteacher of St Nicholas. The Year 2 children have the opportunity to ask any questions they would like to know and also listen to the previous pupils explain how they have settled into juniors.

The Year 2 teacher and Headteacher also have an informal meeting with the Year 2 parents to discuss the transition at the beginning of the summer term.
